1. Fuel-to-Oil Ratio & Fuel Selection

Run a 24:1 fuel-to-oil mixture (1/2 pint of high-quality TC-W3 2-stroke marine oil per 1 gallon of gas, or 1 quart of oil per 6 gallons of gas). Always use non-ethanol gasoline if available, as ethanol breaks down vintage rubber fuel lines, cork floats, and internal gaskets.

2. Ignition System Tune-Up

The built-in flywheel magneto system is straightforward and extremely reliable once overhauled. Common failure points on original units include cracked ignition coils and corroded contact breaker points. When restoring a 5D16:

  • Inspect the ignition coils under the flywheel for cracked plastic insulation. Standard OMC universal coils fit directly.

3. Cooling System & Water Pump

Check the float—if it is original coated cork, replace it with a modern alcohol-resistant float to prevent sinking. To tune:
