Maintenance, Restoration & Fuel Advice

Fuel/Oil Mixture: Like most OMC-manufactured two-stroke engines from this vintage era, the Gale 12S13 relies on oil blended directly into the fuel to lubricate internal bearings and cylinder walls. A fuel-to-oil ratio of 24:1 (1 quart of modern TC-W3 two-stroke outboard oil to 6 gallons of regular 87-octane unleaded fuel) is recommended. Avoid running modern 50:1 pre-mixes, as vintage needle and bushing bearings require the heavier lubrication of a 24:1 ratio. Whenever possible, use ethanol-free gasoline to prevent damage to internal fuel lines and carb gaskets.

Ignition System Maintenance: The built-in flywheel magneto system is straightforward and dependable. When restoring an engine that has sat idle for years, inspect the ignition coils underneath the flywheel. Original vintage OMC coils frequently develop cracked plastic insulation, causing spark breakdown under heat. Replacing damaged coils, fitting new contact point sets (gapped to .020 inches), and swapping in fresh spark plugs will usually restore strong ignition spark.

Cooling System Care: The cooling system uses a synthetic rubber rotor (impeller) located in the lower unit. Never start or run the motor out of water, even for a few seconds, as running dry will instantly tear the rubber blades. Before taking a restored motor out on the water, drop the gearcase and install a fresh water pump impeller to prevent powerhead overheating.

Fuel System & Carburetor Tuning: The carburetor features fully adjustable high-speed and low-speed needle valves. To set up the carb for smooth idling and crisp acceleration, start with both needle valves open approximately 1 to 1.5 turns from gently seated.
