Maintenance, Restoration, and Fuel Mix Advice
Fuel/Oil Mixture: Like most OMC-built 2-stroke outboard motors of this era, the 5DL18 relies on oil mixed directly into the gasoline for internal lubrication. A fuel mixture of 24:1 (1/2 pint of TC-W3 outboard oil per 1 gallon of gas) is generally recommended to ensure adequate lubrication of internal bronze bushings and bearings. Always use modern, high-grade TC-W3 marine two-stroke oil paired with ethanol-free gasoline whenever possible, as ethanol modern fuels can degrade vintage rubber fuel lines, fuel pump diaphragms, and carburetor components.
Ignition System Maintenance: The built-in flywheel magneto system is exceptionally reliable, but aging components are a common point of failure on unrestored motors. If you experience weak or missing spark, pull the flywheel to inspect the dual ignition coils, breaker points, and condensers. Cracking plastic on original coils is widespread; replacing them with standard OMC-style universal ignition coils, setting the breaker points to 0.020 inches, and replacing the condensers will usually restore a strong, bright blue spark.
Cooling System Care: Never run the motor dry out of the water. The rubber impeller water pump must be inspected and replaced prior to putting a long-stored motor back into service. Over time, original rubber blades set into a permanent set or break down entirely, leading to powerhead overheating. Ensure the cooling passages in the cylinder jacket are free of mineral buildup or debris.
Carburetor & Gearcase Tuning: The float-feed carburetor features accessible high- and low-speed mixture needles. For initial tuning, gently seat both needles, then back the high-speed needle out approximately 3/4 to 1 turn and the low-speed needle out about 1-1/2 turns.
