Gale Model 3D16 Outboard Motor Specs & Overview
Overview of the Gale Model 3D16 Outboard
Gale Products, a division of Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), played a major role in mid-century American boating. Designed as a budget-friendly and dependable alternative to OMC’s flagship Johnson and Evinrude lines, Gale outboards shared many high-quality mechanical components with their sister brands. Gale motors were built both under their own name and private-labeled for major department stores and catalog retailers, including Montgomery Ward (as Sea King).
The Gale Model 3D16 is a classic 3.0 horsepower single-cylinder outboard engineered for portability, simplicity, and easy operation. Weighing just 38 pounds and featuring a built-in 0.5-gallon gravity-fed fuel tank, this compact 2-stroke engine was an ideal match for canoes, small rowboats, tenders, and lightweight fishing craft.

Maintenance, Restoration, and Fuel Mix Guidance
2-Stroke Fuel-to-Oil Ratio:
Because small vintage OMC engines from this era rely on bronze bushings rather than full needle bearings on certain internal surfaces, running a rich oil mixture is vital for engine longevity. A standard mixture of 24:1 (1/2 pint of oil per 1.5 gallons of gasoline) using a quality TC-W3 rated outboard oil and unleaded fuel is strongly recommended. Avoid using ethanol-blend fuels (E10/E15) if possible, as ethanol damages vintage fuel lines, carb gaskets, and cork fuel floats.
Ignition System Care:
The flywheel magneto system used on the 3D16 is simple and highly reliable. Restoration usually involves pulling the flywheel to inspect the ignition coils, breaker points, and condensers. Original OMC-style coils often crack over time due to age; modern reproduction OMC coils drop directly into place. Clean the point contacts with fine sandpaper or a point file and adjust the point gap to 0.020 inches at maximum opening.
Cooling System & Water Pump:
This motor relies on a synthetic rubber rotor (impeller) for positive-displacement cooling. Never start the engine out of water, even for a few seconds, as running dry will instantly shred the rubber rotor. If restoring a motor that has been sitting, replace the cooling impeller before taking it out on the water to prevent catastrophic overheating.
Gearcase & Lower Unit:
The 3D16 utilizes full 360-degree rotation for reverse operation rather than a mechanical forward/neutral/reverse gearcase lever. Check the lower unit lubricant regularly. Drain old gear oil and refill with marine-grade non-detergent outboard gear lubricant (such as Marine SAE 90 or Lubriplate 105 grease, depending on seal condition). If milky oil drains out, replace the lower unit seals and prop shaft spaghetti seals.
