Gale Model 22D15 Outboard Motor Specs & Overview

Gale Outboard Motor Overview (Model 22D15)

Gale Products, a division of the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), was renowned for producing rugged, reliable, and mechanical outboards throughout the mid-20th century. While OMC’s premier brands like Johnson and Evinrude received top-tier cosmetic updates and marketing, Gale motors—including the Buccaneer line and store brands like Sea King—focused on simple, durable engineering. The Gale Model 22D15 (and related 22D16) utilizes OMC’s legendary 35.7 cubic inch powerhead, delivering a solid 25 horsepower. Known for its torque and dependability, this motor is a favorite among vintage boating enthusiasts and collectors looking for classic 1950s power.

Restoration and Maintenance Guidelines

1. Fuel Mixture & Lubrication:
Because vintage OMC powerheads of this vintage rely on a combination of bushing and roller bearings, running the correct oil mixture is vital to prevent engine damage. Use a 24:1 fuel-to-oil mix (1 quart of TC-W3 rated outboard oil to 6 gallons of gasoline). Avoid using modern ethanol-blended fuels (E10) if possible, as ethanol breaks down original fuel lines, damages cork carburetor floats, and absorbs moisture during storage.

2. Ignition System Overhaul:
The built-in flywheel magneto is straightforward to service. Before attempting to start a long-dormant engine, remove the flywheel to inspect the ignition components. Original green OMC coils frequently crack over time and must be replaced. Clean or replace the contact breaker points, set the point gap precisely to 0.020 inches, and install fresh spark plugs (typically Champion J4C or J6C, gapped to 0.030 inches).

3. Cooling System & Water Pump:
Never run this motor without water, even briefly. The cooling system relies on a flexible rubber impeller located inside the lower unit housing. Prior to putting a restored motor in the water, replace the water pump impeller. Age causes the rubber blades to harden or disintegrate, which can clog cooling passages and overheat the powerhead.

4. Lower Unit & Gearcase Service:
Inspect the lower unit oil before taking the motor out on the water. Drain the existing fluid to check for metal shavings or milky contamination, which indicates failing prop shaft or drive shaft seals. Refill the gearcase from the bottom drain hole using standard marine 80W-90 gear lubricant or OMC Hi-Vis lube until it flows out the top vent hole.
