Maintenance, Restoration & Fuel Mix Advice

Fuel/Oil Mixture: For standard operation of vintage OMC two-stroke powerheads from this era, a 24:1 fuel-to-oil ratio (1 quart of high-quality TC-W3 two-stroke marine oil per 6 gallons of gas) is strongly recommended to protect internal wrist pins and bronze bushings. Always use 87-octane ethanol-free gasoline to prevent rubber breakdown in the fuel lines, carb gaskets, and fuel pump diaphragms.

Cooling System Care: The synthetic rubber impeller in the water pump should be inspected and replaced prior to putting a newly acquired motor back into service. Running these motors dry for even a few seconds can destroy the impeller blades, leading to severe powerhead overheating.

Ignition System Maintenance: The built-in flywheel magneto relies on standard dual ignition coils, breaker points, and capacitors (condensers). Set the ignition breaker point gaps to .020 inches. Original vintage OMC coils often develop cracked outer casings over time; replace them with modern potted aftermarket coils to ensure reliable spark across both cylinders.

Carburetor Tuning & Lower Unit: Clean out any dried fuel varnish in the float bowl and clear the high- and low-speed jet passages. Set the initial low-speed needle to 1.5 turns out and high-speed to 1 turn out as a baseline before fine-tuning on the water. Finally, drain and refill the gearcase with fresh Hi-Vis marine gear lube, replacing the drain plug washers to prevent water intrusion.
