Running a dry pump for even a few seconds can ruin the rubber blades, leading to severe powerhead overheating. Ensure the cooling passages in the cylinder head are free from salt build-up or debris.
- Ignition Service: The flywheel magneto uses standard OMC ignition components (points, condensers, and high-tension coils). Vintage coils from this era are notorious for cracking over time due to thermal breakdown of the original epoxy coating. Replacing the coils, setting the breaker point gap to .020″, and cleaning the ground surfaces will ensure strong spark across both cylinders.
- Fuel System & Carburetor: Rebuild the float-feed carburetor with modern fuel-resistant gaskets and a new needle/seat. Check the high and low-speed adjustment needles for groove damage from over-tightening. Set the initial low-speed needle at approximately 1-1/2 turns out and the high-speed needle at 3/4 to 1 turn out before fine-tuning on the water.

Always use 87-octane non-ethanol regular gasoline whenever possible. Ethanol blends degrade vintage rubber fuel lines, destroy original cork carburetor floats, and attract moisture that leads to internal corrosion during off-season storage.
