This equals 1 quart of high-quality TC-W3 two-stroke marine oil mixed into 6 gallons of gasoline (or approximately 5.3 oz of oil per gallon of gas). Whenever possible, use ethanol-free unleaded gasoline to prevent damage to vintage rubber components, cork floats, and internal fuel lines.

Restoration, Maintenance & Service Tips

Gale outboard motors are favored by vintage marine restorers due to their mechanical simplicity and shared parts compatibility with OMC motors from the same era.

  • Magneto & Ignition Repair: The motor uses OMC’s standard flywheel magneto setup. If experiencing weak or no spark, pull the flywheel and inspect the ignition coils. Vintage coils commonly crack over time; modern OMC universal coils are direct drop-in replacements. Set the ignition breaker points to .020 inches.
  • Cooling System Care: Always service the lower unit water pump before running a long-dormant motor. Replace the rubber impeller, clean out the water intake screens, and ensure the cooling passages in the powerhead are free of salt crystals or mud-dauber nests. Never run the motor out of water.
  • Carburetor Rebuilds: Clean the high-speed and low-speed needle jets thoroughly. If the carburetor still uses an original shellac-coated cork float, replace it with a modern ethanol-resistant float to prevent sticking and fuel overflowing. Initial setup starting points are generally 1.5 turns out on the low-speed needle and 1 turn out on the high-speed needle, fine-tuned under load.
  • Gearcase Maintenance: Inspect the lower unit oil regularly. If the drained gear lube appears milky or contaminated with water, replace the prop shaft seal, shift shaft seal, and drive shaft seal. Refill with high-viscosity SAE 80W-90 outboard gear lubricant.
  • Electrical Wiring: Check all high-current starter cables, solenoid wiring, and grounding points. Corroded ground wires are the most common cause of weak electric starter performance on these models.
