1. Ignition System:
The flywheel magneto system relies on dual coils, breaker points, and condensers. Original OMC coils from this era are notorious for cracking due to age. Replace them with modern epoxy-encapsulated OMC/Universal ignition coils. Set the breaker point gap to precisely .020 inches at high lobe peak.
2. Cooling System Impeller:
Never start the motor dry. The lower unit houses a synthetic rubber impeller that hardens and degrades over time. Always replace the water pump impeller before putting a revived motor into service. Ensure the rubber grommets on the water delivery tube seal correctly during lower unit reassembly to prevent cooling pressure loss.
3. Carburetor & Fuel Delivery:
The concentric float carburetor features both high-speed and low-speed adjustable needle valves. To establish a baseline setting for starting, open the low-speed needle valve 1.5 turns out from light seat, and the high-speed needle 1 turn out.
