Fuel/Oil Mixture: Like most OMC-built outboards of this vintage, the Gale 12D15 relies on oil mixed directly into the fuel to lubricate the crankshaft bushings and cylinder walls. The standard recommended mixture for this engine is 24:1 (1/2 pint of oil per 1 gallon of regular unleaded gasoline). Always use a quality TC-W3 rated 2-stroke marine oil. Avoid modern high-ethanol gasoline (E10/E15) if possible, or use a fuel stabilizer to protect original fuel lines, float bowls, and rubber carb components from phase separation and degradation.
Ignition System Maintenance: The built-in flywheel magneto is a time-tested design using dual coils, points, and condensers under the flywheel. When tuning up the 12D15, clean or replace the ignition points and set the point gap to 0.020 inches at full peak cam lift. Vintage OMC cracked green coils are a common point of failure on un-restored engines; replacing them with modern epoxy-encapsulated OMC-style replacement coils will restore strong spark across both cylinders.
Cooling System: Never run this engine out of water, even for a few seconds. The cooling system utilizes a synthetic rubber impeller located in the lower unit housing. Prior to putting a restored engine back into service, replace the lower unit water pump impeller. Check that the tell-tale spray or bypass port discharges water properly once running to prevent powerhead overheating.
Gearcase & Lower Unit: The 12D15 features a full Forward-Neutral-Reverse mechanical gearshift. Before taking the motor out on the water, drain and replace the gearcase oil using standard marine outboard lower unit gear lube (80W-90). Inspect the drain plug seals for cracking to ensure water does not enter the lower gear cavity.
