1. Fuel-to-Oil Ratio and Fuel System
Because mid-century small outboards rely on bushing and needle bearings that require heavy lubrication, you should run a 24:1 fuel-to-oil mixture (1/2 pint of TC-W3 2-stroke outboard oil per 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline). Avoid using modern ethanol-blended gas (E10) if possible, as ethanol can degrade vintage rubber fuel lines and corrode cork carburetor floats. The carburetor features both high-speed and low-speed adjustable packing nuts; start with both needles turned out approximately 1 to 1.5 turns from gently seated position for initial tuning.
2. Ignition System Tune-Up
The 5D15 utilizes standard OMC magneto componentry under the flywheel. When servicing the ignition:
- Clean or replace the contact points, setting the gap to 0.020 inches at peak cam lobe lift.

Drain and inspect the lower unit gear oil prior to seasonal use. Check for water intrusion, which indicates a failed prop shaft seal, shift rod O-ring, or driveshaft seal. Refill the gearcase from the bottom drain plug upward using a quality marine 80W-90 or OMC Hi-Vis outboard gear lube until it flows out the upper vent plug.
