Gale Model 12D16 Outboard Motor Specs & Overview

Overview of the Gale 12D16 Outboard Motor

Gale Products, a former division of the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), manufactured rugged, dependable outboards that shared core mechanical designs with their sister brands, Johnson and Evinrude. The Gale 12D16 (part of the popular 12D13–12D16 series) represents mid-range utility power at its best. Rated at 12.0 horsepower, this twin-cylinder, 17.89 cubic inch motor offered boaters a perfect balance of portability, punchy torque, and modern features like full gearshift control (Forward-Neutral-Reverse) and a synchronized twist-grip throttle.

Fuel-to-Oil Ratio & Lubrication

Because mid-century OMC and Gale powerheads rely heavily on bronze wrist-pin bushings alongside needle bearings, modern lean fuel ratios are not recommended. For optimal engine life and wear protection, run a 24:1 fuel-to-oil mixture (1/2 pint of oil per 1 gallon of gasoline, or 1 quart per 6-gallon tank).

Always use high-quality TC-W3 rated 2-stroke marine oil mixed with fresh, ethanol-free gasoline whenever possible. Ethanol-blended fuels quickly degrade vintage neoprene fuel lines, cork fuel floats, and pump diaphragms.

Maintenance & Restoration Tips

  • Ignition System Refurbishment: The flywheel magneto is highly reliable, but original 1950s/60s green epoxy ignition coils are prone to cracking over time. Standard OMC replacement coils, breaker points, and condensers drop right into the stator plate. Set the breaker point gap precisely to .020 inches at high cam.
  • Water Pump Service: The cooling system uses a flexible synthetic rubber rotor. Never start the motor out of water, even for a few seconds, as dry running destroys the impeller. Replace the water pump impeller during any restoration prior to lake testing.
  • Carburetor Rebuild: The concentric float carburetor features simple high- and low-speed needle adjustments. Carefully clean out all internal passages with carburetor cleaner and compressed air. When reassembling, set the low-speed needle initially at 1-1/2 turns out and the high-speed needle at 3/4 to 1 turn out, fine-tuning under load once the motor reaches operating temperature.
  • Gearcase & Lower Unit: Check the lower unit oil regularly for signs of water intrusion (milky appearance). Drain and refill using modern non-corrosive marine outboard gear lubricant, and replace the drain and vent plug fiber washers to maintain a watertight seal.
