Restoration & Maintenance Guide
1. Ignition System Overhaul: The built-in flywheel magneto is a time-tested design, but original coils from this era frequently crack due to heat and age. During restoration, pull the flywheel to inspect the coils, points, and condensers. Set the breaker point gap to 0.020 inches. OMC universal coils and standard ignition tune-up kits drop directly into this powerhead.
2. Impeller & Cooling System: Never run this engine dry. The positive/centrifugal cooling system uses a synthetic rubber rotor (impeller) inside the water pump housing. Rubber impellers dry out and break down over time; replace the impeller prior to putting a vintage motor back in service to prevent thermal head warping or scoring the cylinders.
3. Carburetor Adjustments: The concentric float carburetor features independently adjustable high-speed and low-speed needle valves. For a starting baseline setup during restoration, gently turn both needle valves in until lightly seated, then back them out 1 to 1-1/4 turns. Fine-tune the slow-speed needle while idling in forward gear and the high-speed needle while running at full throttle on the water.
4. Lower Unit Gearcase: Check the lower unit oil before taking the motor out. Drain old lubricant and check for a milky appearance, which indicates leaking propeller shaft or drive shaft seals. Refill the lower unit from the bottom drain hole using standard marine high-viscosity outboard gear lubricant until it flows out the top vent hole.
